Animals Inside & Out
All of the 5th graders in the Northwest District attended a fun-filled day put on by the Hall County Extension Office and educators for Raising Nebraska at the Nebraska State Fairgrounds. The program was titled “Animals Inside and Out”. The 5th graders were divided into groups of about 10 students and went around to different stations. Each station had to do with a body system in farm animals (cattle, sheep, chickens, pigs, and goats). An extension worker taught about the body system and then had the students do a hands on activity. For example, they were taught about the muscular system by a demonstration with a pineapple. The pineapple was a model of an animal like a cow or pig. Cutting the pineapple was a model of cutting the meat on an animal (the muscles). The students were able to touch an actual cow’s stomach when learning about the digestive system. They built a model of two bones meeting at a joint when learning about the skeletal system. After learning about all of the body systems, they learned the by-products of animals (crayons, lipstick, footballs, etc.) and some management issues like how to give vaccinations to animals. The day was enjoyed by all that went!
