From the Principal’s Desk
One R Families,
Welcome Back! I hope everyone enjoyed their summer break with family, friends, pool time, ball games and vacations. I am super pumped to see the students fill our empty hallways. I look forward to continuing the partnership with families in fostering “A Culture of Excellence,” at 1R. The school year is just around the corner, Thursday, August 10th 8-12p.m. is the scheduled first day for students. Please check out the supply list on the 1R Website. The PTO 1R Open House will be Monday evening August, 14th from 5:30-7:00p.m. School Pictures are scheduled for August 22nd.
Please help me welcome a few new faces to 1R. Tim Meyer is the new 5th-8th grade Band teacher. Mr. Meyer will be serving all four K-8 buildings. Scott Musil and Scott Miller will be joining the Middle School staff from Chapman. Mr. Musil will be teaching Science and Technology. Mr. Miller will be teaching Reading/Language Arts. Cami Bergman will be a half time Middle School Resource teacher. Kelly Olesen and Joel Hope are not new to 1R but will be in different roles this year. Mrs. Olesen will be the full time K-8 Resource teacher. Mr. Hope will be the 4th grade teacher. Ms. Patti Wackel will be a new aide in the Resource classroom. Mrs. Becky Bachle will join our lower grades as an aide. We are excited to have these new faces join the 1R Team!
New this year thanks to the help of the Northwest District and PTO will be a buzz in door system. The simple press of a button, state your name and you will be buzzed into the school. No more carrying your phone or calling ahead will be necessary. The office will have a visual through a camera system along with voice identification. We are excited to have this new safe and convenient system. Thank you PTO and Northwest!
Our K-8 Math curriculums will look different this year. This past year teachers from across the district have been reviewing Math curriculums ultimately deciding on Eureka and Big Ideas Math. The K-5 team adopt Eureka Math and the 6th-12th grades adopted Big Ideas. Both these programs matched the standards and rigor we feel necessary for our students to succeed in today’s world. Please be watching for information coming home about the new curriculum. We will be hosting a Math Night for parents early in the school year.
The 6th-8th grades will take their Chromebook home this year. Students will be responsible for charging, caring for and managing their technology. Parents check into backpacks with pockets for technology. Our new curriculums are online and this will allow students as well as parents to access homework or lessons. Middle School students and parents reminder of the “Technology BootCamp” at Northwest High School on either August 3 or August 9 you must attend one of these camps prior to your child receiving a Chromebook. (See website for times) Please stop by 1R to complete paperwork and pay technology fee before BootCamp.
We would like to invite any 7th & 8th grade parents who may have child going out for a fall sport to a meeting on Tuesday, August 15 at 6:30.m @ NW High School old auditorium. This would include football, volleyball, and cross country. The purpose of the meeting will be to inform all parents of the expectations for all fall sports, including transportation, schedule, paperwork, concussion testing, etc… Coaches will also answer any questions you have about any aspect of the program. If you have any questions regarding this meeting or any other aspect of your child’s participation in activities, please contact Mike Sorensen at Northwest High School or your building principal.
On August 21st, we will all witness the historical “Solar Eclipse.” Thanks to PTO for purchasing safety glasses for our students. Northwest District plans on having sack lunches, so students can have picnics and observe this amazing event. In May families signed a waiver form so their child/children can participate during registration. If we do not have a signed waiver your child will not be able to be outside. The office will be contacting families who do not have a signed waiver on file.
Federal Lunch Program information was sent in July. Federal guidelines require paperwork to be submitted each year. ALL paperwork must be completed and returned to the Northwest Business office prior to school starting. If you need paperwork you may stop by Northwest Business office or 1R office. We DO NOT charge or CARRY lunch balances at school. You will receive alerts from Northwest via email and/or phone, the office will send a notice with your child if balance is $0.00. If we do not receive payment your child will be asked to call home and /or bring a lunch until balance is paid. Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.
Reminder Parking lot protocol. Everyone please enter from the North off 1R Road. K-2 are in the left lane and 3rd-8th are in the right lane. We asked that you pull clear forward when picking up your child do not stop at their grade level line pull forward. Please see website map for visual and inform everyone who may be picking up your child. Our first priority is the safety for everyone. The east parking lot near Webb Rd. is not for daily student pick up. This is reserved for families who need to enter school, Third City Connect Pick up, Athletic Buses etc… Please be patient, drive slowly, pull all the way forward when asked by staff. If we work together, it can be very efficient and safe. The parking lot is typically cleared out in under 10 minutes from when students are dismissed outside. Again, thank you in advance for your cooperation and the safety of all!
