1-R School

Monthly Letter to Parents

Scott Mazour, Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Are you ready for some change? We are going to have it next school year!

STAFF CHANGES  We will have a number of staff members in different positions next year. We are sorry to lose Mrs. Trish Hostetler and Ms. JaLena Clement because they are outstanding people and teachers. Fortunately, we feel we have highly qualified replacements and, with some moving of teachers, feel we have an outstanding staff in place for 2008-2009! Here is what we anticipate for next year. Mrs. Kris Coates, who has a master’s degree in reading, will be moving to second grade to work with students in that crucial period for reading development. Mr. Brett Jurey will be moving up to fourth grade, so our current third graders get to enjoy Mr. Jurey again next year. Mrs. Bobbi Byerly will replace Ms. Clement as our middle school math teacher. Mrs. Byerly has a vast amount of experience in math and will be certified in middle school math. In addition, Mr. Deida will not be back the remainder of this year nor returning next year.

NEW FACES  There will also be some new faces among the 1-R staff for 2008-2009. Miss Jenny Jameson, who will be changing her name this summer when she gets married, will be our third grade teacher and volleyball coach. Miss Jameson has been substituting this spring after finishing her student teaching in the Kearney Public Schools before Christmas. Miss Jameson was also an assistant coach for the Kearney varsity volleyball team. Miss Jameson loves sports and helping students to become better readers. Miss Vanessa Schmit, who is also getting married this summer, will be our new fifth grade teacher. Miss Schmit, who will assist Miss Jameson with volleyball next year, student taught at Elkhorn Public Schools and has been subbing since finishing student teaching at Christmas. Miss Schmit also very much enjoys helping students to become the best they can be. Both Miss Jameson and Miss Schmit come to us with the highest of recommendations, and we feel fortunate to have them on staff. I feel very good about our additions and movement of staff to give your children the best opportunities to learn at the highest level.

FIELD DAY  You should have received information regarding the field day, which will occur on Friday, May 2, at Northwest High School. This is for all students in kindergarten through sixth grade, and will start at 12:30 p.m. If you plan to attend, please park in front of Northwest High School as the high school students will be dismissed at noon. In addition, please return the information regarding whether you can drive, which you should have received earlier this week.

MUSIC PROGRAMS  Mrs. Liz Harwart, who assists Mr. Shack with the Northwest choirs, will fill the 1-R music vacancy for the remainder of the year. Beginning Monday, she will be helping to prepare our students for their May 1 (kindergarten through fourth grade) and May 6 (fifth through eighth grade) music programs. Both programs will begin at 7 p.m. in the 1-R gym. We are happy to have someone as talented as Mrs. Harwart to assist us!

FINAL DAYS OF SCHOOL  Our eighth grade recognition night is Tuesday, May 13, at 7 p.m. The last day for students in kindergarten through seventh grade will be Friday, May 16. Students will dismiss at noon on the 16th. I want to make sure you are aware that you are invited that morning to an awards assembly for your children. Each teacher will be handing out various awards that your children have earned throughout the course of the year. That assembly will be in our gym at approximately 8:15 a.m. on that Friday, May 16. It will be a fitting end to a year that has shown tremendous growth by your children in many areas!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 385-6352.
