Bad Weather!!!!

How We Can Stay Safe

by Janet Kisner

It's that time of the year when we should keep our eyes on the sky. Spring and summer can bring severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. These can be very dangerous.

Tornado

Here are some safety tips for storms that may bring tornadoes:

  • If outside, get into a building or find a low spot such as a ditch.
  • When in your house, get to the basement and in an interior room without windows.
  • Do not open the windows. If a tornado comes by, it will do that for you.
  • If in a car, get out and get in to a ditch or a low place.
  • Do not go under an overpass. The overpass becomes a wind tunnel, and the tornado will blow you out.
  • If you don't have a basement, get into an interior room, such as a bathroom or closet, on the lowest floor.

Lightning

Do not go outside during a lightning storm. Use the 30-30 rule. If you see lightning and hear thunder in 30 seconds or less, then the storm is too close. Go inside and wait 30 minutes after you don't hear thunder anymore before going back outside.
