AUG/SEP MUSIC BOOSTER NEWS & NOTES

by: Ruby Tupper

Have you ever thought about the work our kids put into the shows they perform for us? Are you aware that at Northwest High School the Music Programs do not take the summer off? In fact, the Northwest Concert Band gave an awesome performance on the Galaxy Stage at the Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida May 30th. This trip was the culmination of months of fundraising and hard work that resulted in a performance each member of the band can and should be proud of!

During the summer, our music students attend many camps. Some ensembles begin rehearsals well before the beginning of school. Students new to the marching band attended New Member Band Camp the end of July and were joined by the remaining members for Full Band Camp the first week of August.

The annual Show Choir Retreat was held July 28th- August 3rd. A highlights of the retreat is the potluck dinner for all of the students involved in show choir and their families. The evening’s entertainment includes a sneak peak at the supercalifragilistic-expialidocious competition show 14K will be performing for the 08-09 season!

Everyone that attended the Music Jubilee Night on August 19th got to see just how much all of the students’ have accomplished so far. What a treat it was to watch the opening numbers of the 14K Gold Show Choir competition show, which was absolutely AMAZING even in its infancy stages!

Under the direction of Northwest’s new Director of Bands, Shawn Pfanstiel, the marching band played music from the field show they have been working on since the end of July. This year’s show features music from Cirque du Soleil and promises to be one of the finest shows produced by the Northwest Marching Band.

I encourage you to be involved in whatever activities your child becomes involved in at Northwest High School. That is the best way to support them and stay connected to them as they grow into active young adults. Becoming a member of Music Boosters is one of the best ways I know to support each student involved in the music programs at Northwest. Membership forms and Talent Surveys, which let us know how you want to be involved, are available by clicking on the links below. Return the completed forms to Ruby Tupper, 4228 Kay Avenue, Grand Island, NE 68803. If you have any questions about Music Booster please call Ruby at 384-7422 or e-mail her at rtupper@esu10.org.
