Northwest School District adds Preschool

Preschool starts at St. Libory

The Northwest School District welcomes the new Preschool at St. Libory Elementary.  Teacher Becky Bartak, and "Co-teacher"/Para, Cheryl Eddy, began preparations in late June and continued training throughout July and August.  The first day finally arrived on September 3, 2008, with very excited students and and parents The Grand Island Independent was also  at school to record the historic first day of preschool.

The Preschool caters to 3 and 4 year old children and offers many fantastic activities for the little ones to learn through discovery, including sensory tables, activity centers such as art and science, an interactive playground set up, and an area to ride tricycles and big wheels.  The morning preschoolers are served breakfast and lunch while the afternoon group is served lunch and an afternoon snack.  The students engage in many non-classroom activities as well, while walking down the hall, flapping their arms up and down like butterflies or walking slowly and deliberately like turtles.  The sing the ABC's song while washing their hands.  There are many reinforcements they receive while building knowledge about letters, colors, and shapes.

Transportation is provided for our morning students coming over from Chapman.  Currently we have no other transportation available.  Duties are shared in driving the van on a weekly rotation between St. Libory and Chapman.  "We're off to a great start," boasted Principal Jeff Ellsworth, "the kids are excited, the staff is excited, and the parents are excited.  We are very pleased to be able to offer this program within the Northwest District and our parents are very appreciative, as well."
