Description of Our Programs
Program Objectives:
The Northwest High School Special Education Department strives to meet the needs of individual students as prescribed y the Individual Educational Plans. If needs are greater than the services we can provide, a contracted program outside of the district can be obtained.
We include students in the regular education curriculum to the “maximum extent appropriate” and in the “least restrictive environment” as outlined by the Individuals With Disabilities Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
Goals:
*To assist students in their efforts to successfully complete the requirements for high school graduation and earn a diploma
*To assist students in becoming responsible adults
*To assist students in becoming self-advocates
*To be a support to students in the regular education classroom in which the students are included
*To assist students in making high school plans that will help them transition to post-secondary goals
Available Services:
Level 1 Study Assistance
Level 1 Affective Skill Assistance
Level 1 ALS Credit Recovery
Level 2 Core Curriculum Instruction
This could include English, Math, Science and Social Studies as needed for
graduation requirements
Level 2 Advocacy/Life Skill Assistance
Resource Level 1
Level 1 services provide assistance to students with low average to above average ability scores but need assistance in the regular curriculum due to a variety of concerns. Verification may include: Hearing Impairment, Specific Learning Disability, Speech and Language Impairment, Other Health Impairment, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Visual Impairment.
Level 1 students may be in the regular curriculum for all classes with monitoring only by the resource case manager. These students also have the option of having a one period study time in the resource room to get time and assistance in completing regular classroom assignments and expectations. Finally, they are offered a credit recovery class to earn back credits lost in previous core classes.
Level 1 students have the option of having tests read to them outside of the regular classroom as needed. Level 1 students qualify for grade modifications anywhere from 5 to 15% as indicated on a verification rubric. This modification helps them to be successful in a “least restrictive” environment.
Resource Level 2
Level II services provide assistance to students below average ability scores and low academic scores. These students need more than one period of resource assistance especially in the core curriculum areas but less than a full day placement. Verification includes: Mild Mentally Handicapped.
Level II students may be in the regular curriculum for most of their elective courses. The core curriculum may be provided by resource staff in English, math, science and history. Some of these students are able to be successful in the regular core classes that are taught at a lower level than what is required by 4-year colleges. Level II students qualify for grade modifications in the regular curriculum anywhere from 15 to 25% as indicated on a verification rubric. This modification helps them to be successful in a “least restrictive” environment.
NWHS is not able to offer all Level 2 classes each year. For a full list of available classes, contact the counselor’s office to review the course description of each class.
