Mother Goose Calls

Once upon a time . . .

Chaos descended the halls of 1-R School. Kittens, cats, dogs, spiders, mice, a fly, a cow, a butterfly, a bumblebee, a frog, and a fox, it seems, were creating quite a commotion! Other strange characters were also observed roaming the halls, which included a pumpkin eater, an old woman with too many children, a little girl who liked to play in the rain, two Indians, two football players, a dancer, a crooked man, an egg, a fireman, a boy with a horn, a little girl with a doll, girls with lambs, missing sheep, and spiders. Also making their presence known were Mistress Mary, Mother Goose, Robin Hood, Wee Willie, and a fisherman. Royalty was also seen strolling the halls—Old King Cole and the King and Queen of Hearts! There was, however, no need to be alarmed or concerned. It was once again the first grade's annual production of Mother Goose!

It all began when each first grader met with their fourth-grade buddy upon arriving at school. The children made necessary changes in the dressing rooms (the fourth-grade classroom and the library). Soon, costumes as well as the first graders' school clothes, were strewn across the floor. The first graders dressed in their group costumes utilizing bulldog clips, safety pins, masking tape, and plastics bags, so as to ensure that proper fit.

Under the direction of Mrs. Harwart, the children entertained the audience by singing "A Tisket, A Tasket," "Little Boy Blue," "Humpty Dumpty," "Rain, Rain Go Away," "Three Little Kittens," "Pease Porridge Hot," "Row, Row, Row Your Boat," and "Where Has My Little Dog Gone?" Small groups of two or three children then recited various Mother Goose rhymes. Each of the young performers raced back to the dressing rooms where they changed costumes with the help of their fourth-grade buddies. The fourth graders kept costumes well organized in order to prevent that "lost sock" problem.

The production ended with each first grader returning to the stage to recite an individual poem. After the final performance, costumes were returned to the brown paper sacks, and with the help of their fourth-grade buddies, the youngsters were transformed from those special characters into the first graders of Miss Rupp's class.
