Monthly Letter to Parents
Scott Mazour, Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year! We are off to a great start with an awesome group of students to work with! I want to share some information with you regarding the school year.
BBQ and Open House The back-to-school BBQ was a great success! Our PTO, under the leadership of president Alison Shafer, served hundreds of sandwiches, and after enjoying a great meal, parents had the opportunity to informally meet with their children’s teachers. Thanks to all of you who attended and helped keep the lines of communication open between you and your child’s teacher!
Nebraska State Accountability (NeSA) The NeSA reading test was given to all Nebraska students in grades 3-8 and 11 last spring. Northwest Schools recently received the results of 1-R student achievement, which were, as a whole, very positive with the average student score from 1-R well above the state average. We are, however, planning additional methods of help for those students who performed below state expectations. You will soon be receiving a report of how your child performed individually on this test.
1-R Webpage The school website is a source of information for you and your family. You can access news and information about 1-R and all of the Northwest Public Schools; find information about your family’s lunch balance and child’s grades (grades 4 and above); and find other information that may help your child’s experience at 1-R be a positive one. The website is http://www.ginorthwest.org.
Summer Reading Over the summer, there were a variety of ways for our students to participate in reading. Mrs. Marble opened the library every Wednesday and had fun activities planned for students to do each week. Mrs. True and Mrs. Fitzgerald also sponsored a morning reading program. During the two-week program, students had a great time reading and writing with their classmates. Lastly, reading paid big dividends for 27 students who met the high expectations set by their teachers and received blizzards in the gym last Friday. Those students are currently pictured on the school website, and you will also want to check out the other articles that Mrs. Meis, our school secretary, has placed on the website pertaining to 1-R’s summer reading opportunities.
Thank you to everyone who provided clean, empty milk jugs for the first grade classroom. The first graders and Miss Rupp are happy to announce they now have enough jugs to make “Snoopy”! Thank you for supporting this and many other projects at 1-R.
As always, I wish everyone the best of school years! If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s education, please contact me at 385-6352.
