No Way!!! Summer Reading Program Offered to Students

by Mrs. Tupper

Did you know, at the start of each new school year teachers have noted that students loose some of what they learned during the previous school year? Many studies have concluded this to be true. The reason being attributed to students not reading on a daily basis during the summer break. This concept is often referred to as the "Summer Slide" in the education world. Earlier this week, Mr. Elsworth, Principal at St. Libory School, announced that the school would be implementing a new program this summer in an effort to stop the summer slide in St. Libory!

Beginning June 2nd, the school's Library will be open to students and their families several days during the summer months. Student's will be encouraged to participate in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge and come to the school's library to learn how to Be Creative at Your Library. Students will be able to check out books and participate in special programs and activities to keep St. Libory students reading all summer long. Activities and story times will be designed to for two age groups—PK-3rd and 4-8th grade. Tuesdays will focus on the Preschool-3rd grade age group, with special activities and story time from 10:30-Noon. 4th-8th grades are encouraged to attend special sessions geared especially for them on designated Thursdays from 12:30-1:30.

Summer Library Schedule

Scholastic has challenged each student to read a minimum of four books during the summer. They have also created a special online Scholastic Summer Challenge web site. It is free to join and the web site, which  is designed to motivate children of all ages to read! For our younger readers (ages 3-7) the Garden Game has been designed to encourage them to read all summer long. Older students have the opportunity to participate as members of one of four teams made up of students all over the country. Participants will be able to log their reading minutes online and have them count in the effort to set a new world record for reading. There are also opportunities for the kids to win books, prizes, become Reader of the Week, help others that are less fortunate and enter sweepstakes for more prizes. Parents be sure to check out the web site at www.scholastic.com/summer to find out more about the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge and how to encourage your student to read all summer long!

As we near the end of school, Mrs. Tupper will be distributing information to the students about St. Libory School's own summer reading program. Participating students will have the opportunity to win prizes for being the top reader. The student that logs the most minutes in the Scholastic Summer Challenge will also earn a prize, as will the class or classes that read the most minutes and with the most students that participate in the Scholastic Summer Challenge and the St. Libory Summer Reading program (yep, three class prizes). Start reading now and let's stop the Summer Slide in St. Libory!
