Read Across America Celebrated
D.W. Talks to 1-R Kids
“Read Across America Day” got a one-day head start at 1-R. On Monday, March 1, D.W. came to visit our students in grades K-5! D.W. is Kim Brown, the sister of author Marc Brown, who has written all of the Arthur books and PBS television shows. Kim lives in Litchfield and shares stories about Marc—how he got started and how he writes and illustrates his books, as well as how she was the motivation for the character D.W. 1-R students also learned how to draw Arthur and asked Kim questions about Marc and his favorite character, Arthur.
In the afternoon, our middle school students listened to Scott Miller, who teaches at Chapman. Scott has written several books about children growing up in Nebraska during the time of the pioneers. We felt very privileged to spend a day hearing so much about authors and reading.
On Tuesday, March 2, the Cat in the Hat arrived early to celebrate Read Across America Day at 1-R School. The Cat and some able-bodied second graders greeted students, visitors and staff as they arrived at school. Students in second grade also hosted a readers’ café, where customers could enjoy Dr. Seuss books read to them in a restaurant-style atmosphere, complete with waiters and waitresses! The day coincided with spirit week’s Pajama Day to make the students extra comfortable in their reading!
