MathCounts Team State Bound

Evan W. Garners Individual Championship Title

The 1-R MathCounts team consisting of eighth graders Jacob B., Braydon E., Chris H., Jeremy K., Kayla P., Ashley S., and Evan W., and sixth grader Brandon T. traveled to Kearney on Wednesday, February 3, to compete in the MidStates MathCounts competition against some of the largest middle schools in central Nebraska.

The team finished third out of 24 schools and qualified for the state competition in Lincoln on Saturday, March 13. Individually, out of 160 top math students in central Nebraska, Evan W. garnered the individual championship title, with Kayla P. placing 3rd, Jeremy K. 15th, and Jacob B. 31st. Both Evan and Kayla qualified for state individually, as well.

Team standings were as follows:

1. Aurora
2. Kearney Catholic
3. 1-R
4. Trinity Lutheran
5. Thayer Central
6. Shelton
7. Sunrise Middle School (Kearney)
8. Holdrege
9. Westridge Middle School (Grand Island)
10. Horizon Middle School (Kearney)

Other schools competing included Arapahoe-Holbrook, Barr Middle School, Doniphan Trumbull, Greeley-Wolbach, Harvard, Hastings Middle School, McCook, Palmer, Sandy Creek, Silver Lake, Walnut Middle School, and York.
