On Thursday, February 3, the fifth grade classroom at 1-R School was host to some very important guests for the unveiling of its “Explorer Wax Museum.”

To prepare for the debut, students selected a famous explorer from their history books to portray. Over a period of a few weeks, they researched their explorer, composed a short report, and formulated a speech. Rehearsing their speeches over and over, they spoke as though they were actually the explorers themselves. They also created costumes to portray the explorers.

After a lot of hard work, opening day arrived with all 21 students dressed in costume and ready to present. Honored guests were welcomed with instructions on how to view the museum. Each student was frozen in a pose. As guests approached them, the "explorers" would come to life and give their speech. When they were done speaking, they returned to their “wax” pose. The students did a wonderful job, and most had their speeches memorized. It was evident the students had poured much imagination and creativity into the project, which culminated in authentic portrayals of the explorers and a wonderful experience for their visitors.
