Nebraska Student Recognized at Twitter Headquarters
LINCOLN, Neb. (September 2017) – A recent Grand Island Northwest High School graduate Mitch Fisher, received the invitation of a lifetime to share his school’s social media story at the #Digital4Good event hosted by Twitter at their headquarters in San Francisco on September 18. Fisher, along with 13 other high school students from around the world, was recognized for his impact on his school’s social media culture through digital citizenship.
The nonprofit #ICANHELP created #Digital4Good as a way to empower students to play an active role in improving online environments. The first annual event was created to raise awareness of the power of the student voice for social good in social media. The 14 high school students were nominated by educators and community members recognizing the good that they have created through social media.
Fisher, who is now a freshman at the University of Nebraska Lincoln, was nominated for the recognition by his teacher, Heather Callihan who noted the positivity he created though his Twitter profile, @ginwshipyard, promoting student spirit though motivational messaging for Northwest High School. After she noticed the influence his Twitter presence had on the student body, Callihan invited Fisher to join the Northwest High School student driven social media program and to bring along his Twitter profile.
“A couple of years ago I would have never thought I would be at Twitter HQ sharing my story with other students from around the world,” Fisher said. “It was really great to meet other students who are having a positive impact online.”
Led by Callihan and with the help of Class Intercom, Northwest High School launched its student led social media program in early 2017. Nebraska based Class Intercom is a software platform that allows schools to implement secure and process driven student run social media.
Supported by Class Intercom and other sponsors, Fisher could attend #Digital4Good in person. Adding an additional level of support, Class Intercom president, Taylor Siebert accompanied Fisher to the event in San Francisco.
“Class Intercom fosters an environment for students to take an active role in sharing their school’s stories and developing digital leadership,” said Siebert. “We were so ecstatic to have one of our school’s students receiving such an honor, we had to do everything we could to help him get there.”
Fisher is still basking in the excitement of his trip to Twitter’s headquarters. “This will be a moment in my life I’ll never forget with relationships built for a lifetime!”
