February Note from the Principal
I am ready for winter to end and spring to arrive! Elementary students celebrated 100 days of school on January 16th in some “fine fashion statements!” Parent teacher conferences are next week marking the halfway point of third quarter. January has flown by and February is upon us. Before we know it May will be here and another school year passed – let’s make the most if it!
Parent Teacher Conferences are next Wednesday, February 6th and Thursday, February 7th from 2:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Students will be dismissed at noon on both days with no lunch being served. K-5 teachers have scheduled times. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have not set up a time. Middle School conferences are not scheduled – just come when you are available. Teachers are excited to share your child’s growth since the fall. We look forward to seeing you next week! There is NO school on Friday, February 8th. I would like to remind parents and legal guardians of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). We cannot share academic information with anyone other than biological parents or documented legal guardians. While we value and recognize it takes a community to raise a child, we cannot share academic information outside these parameters——meaning stepparents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, boyfriends or girlfriends etc. We thank you for your cooperation with meeting these requirements of the law.
IMPORTANT 2019-20 SCHOOL REGISTRATION INFO – We are excited to offer a new and improved online registration for the 2019-20 school year. Yes we had online registration last spring, but PowerSchool will allow the school and district to communicate even more effectively as we move forward. PowerSchool also has many other options and ways for us to communicate about your child, our building and district information. Many of you already utilize PowerSchool and have accounts but we need everyone to have an account. In the Spring, this will be the only way to register online for the 2019-20 school year. If you have an account we will need you to verify information and accounts. If you do not have an account we will have staff available at conferences to assist you. I promise it will be quick and painless! Thank you for cooperation in this transition.
IMPORTANT: 8th Grade Parents – Northwest High School 8th Grade Student/Parent Orientation is also on Thursday, February 7th. Open House is from 6-7 P.M. and the Program/Presentation is at 7 P.M. in the auditorium. Please plan accordingly for Parent Teacher Conferences and try to attend Wednesday or Thursday afternoon. We don’t want you to miss out on Open House and all Northwest has to offer! Northwest teachers, counselors and administration will be available to answer questions on classes and opportunities for incoming freshman. They have fun evening planned!
While I wish winter was over, the past few days temperatures remind us it isn’t. Please be mindful of what children are wearing to school and the conditions outside. Please have them bring heavy coats, pants, gloves/mittens and hats. Snow boots and snow pants are necessary if children want to play in the snow. We will go outside as long as feels like 20 degrees or above. Weather closings will continue to be posted on local TV network channels 5, 8, 10/11 and 13. It will be broadcast on radio as well. Northwest Power School alerts will be the most accurate information. Please watch our Facebook and Twitter feeds.
Flu and cold season is upon us. Mr. Arrants and staff continue to clean and sanitize anything and everything they can to combat the spread of germs. Unfortunately, that does not always stop the spread of sickness with almost 200 bodies running around in the building daily, Students are encouraged to use the many hand sanitizers around the building. Please remember that children need to be fever free for 24 hours without medication before returning to school. If your child has a temperature of a 100 degrees or higher we are required to send them home.
Thank you to our PTO for the continued support at 1R. Last Friday, many students and parents enjoyed movie night in the gym watching “Incredibles 2.” On February 16th from 8-10 A.M. they will be hosting a Pancake Feed at Applebee’s. They will be selling tickets for this event at Parent Teacher Conferences. PTO has raised nearly $8,500 toward their playground project.
Thank you again for your continued support in your child’s education. Remember to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and the Google Calendar. We look forward to serving you the rest of this year! As always please do not hesitate to call or stop in the office if you have questions.
Mr. Retzlaff, Principal
