Note From the Principal Desk Sept. 2020
Parents & Guardians
I just want to say thank you for all the support, help and guidance you are providing during these unprecedented times. We have gotten off to a great start this year even with all of the underlying conditions. I am super proud of our staff and students! They have met ever changing challenges day in and day out to be in school. It has been so wonderful to have students and staff back in the building. Again, thank you for your support and patience each week.
Parent Teacher Conferences are next Wednesday, September 23 and Thursday, September 24 from 2:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Students will be dismissed at noon on both days with no lunch being served. K-5 teachers have scheduled times. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have not set up a time. Middle School conferences are not scheduled – just come when you are available. We look forward to seeing you next week! Masks will be recommended but not required. There is NO school on Friday, September 25. I would like to remind parents and legal guardians of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). We cannot share academic information with anyone other than biological parents or documented legal guardians. While we value and recognize it takes a community to raise a child, we cannot share academic information outside these parameters——meaning stepparents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, boyfriends or girlfriends etc. We thank you for your cooperation with meeting these requirements of the law.
Mrs. McGowan has set up an online book fair for this fall. She has sent information home and you can also check out the link on the 1R Facebook page. The book fair will be open online through September 25th. Mrs. McGowan plans to have the book fair back in the spring but for now go online and support your child’s passion for reading and help raise dollars for the 1R Library. If you have any questions please email Mrs. McGowan at email@example.com.
Another quick reminder about traffic flow safety. Please be cautious while driving through our parking lot and look out for students and staff safety. It is very important when entering the parking lot from the North entrance from One R road as we are yielding to one another and using right aways. There is no race worth winning if you are in an accident! Also we understand it is treated like a two lane traffic for a short distance it is very IMPORTANT that we keep speeds SLOW so someone does not turn into you. Thank you again for helping us all be safe!
PTO is off and running doing a wonderful job of supporting our students and staff. Thank you to everyone who came to the DQ Dining Night – there was a great turnout. Thanks to DQ for supporting our school each year. PTO has scheduled a night for 1R families to attend Helgoth’s Pumpkin Patch on Thursday, October 8th from 5-7:30 p.m. Flyers will be sent home. PTO meetings are held the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. except in December. Meetings will be in the Library at 1R. All members are welcome to attend!
Middle school sports is off to a great start. Our student athletes and coaches are working hard and improving each practice and game. There are schedules posted on the district website under sports calendars. Another available resource that is updated live is the Central Conference calendar- https://www.centralconference.org/public/genie/408/school/4/ Simply click on view calendar mark the sport and grade level you would like to follow under Northwest and you are set.
Each year teachers establish classroom routines and procedures so students understand how the classroom works. Over the past month we have practiced a fire drill, tornado, lockdown and evacuation drill. I am proud to say our students and staff have been doing a great job with these drills. Northwest uses the Standard Response Protocol system. Our district and staff have trained with law enforcement in many of these protocols to be prepared in the event of any situation. We practice to be prepared and pray we will never use them! I always invite law enforcement and fire department to participate so they can monitor and provide feedback on ways we may improve. Our Rural Fire Department and Sheriff’s Department have been great supports and we thank them for all their service!
I also hope you had the opportunity to talk with your child about the ROW Oar they received this past month. R-Respectful, O-Ownership, and W-Work as a team is an expectation we are trying to teach students these past two years as they become Vikings! Teachers have shared lessons with your child on how and what it looks like to ROW in our building whether that is in the classroom, hallway, lunchroom, recess etc…. I encourage you to ask your child about ROW Expectations and when your in our building notice posters throughout the building depicting what ROWing together looks like at 1R. A huge thank you to the Northwest Educational Foundation for helping us provide each K-8 student with an Oar!!
Again thank you for your continued educational partnership. We greatly appreciate your support. Reminder to follow our Google Calendar on the 1R website and 1R Facebook page. Please do not hesitate to contact the office or myself if you have any questions 308-385-6352.
