Note from the Principal Desk Oct. 2020

Parents & Guardians,

Wow… the first quarter is gone and we are a week into the second quarter – time truly flies by! I am super proud of our students and staff for how they have handled the daily challenges of this virus. They have been troopers day in and day out with whatever it takes to stay in school. I appreciate everyone’s hard work to keep the school doors open which is the best thing for all of us. Our kids are growing and learning academically, socially and emotionally. Thank you to everyone for your continued support during this unprecedented time.

Middle School boys honor choir has been working hard the past few weeks and they are ready to perform. They will tour and perform at the K-8 buildings this Wednesday, Oct. 28th. Due to the DHM’s and CDC guidelines parents will not be allowed in the schools based on capacities for the individual school performances. A parent ONLY performance will be held on Wednesday Oct. 28th at 3:00p.m in the Northwest Auditorium. We look forward to seeing you there for what will be an awesome performance by the boys!

Report Cards will be uploaded on Oct. 30th in the Power School Parent Portal. Reminder, for information or access to the portal go to the Northwest website under “Parents” tab and click on Power School. Here is also a link to guide you. Page 10 provides specific steps for viewing standard based grades: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eKp2pszYzzQ_71ZJXQ-9IjECDGyXRtA4bJ4_aY1lmN8/edit.

It appears old man winter is arriving without delay. We will go outside as much as possible for recess. Please make sure children are dressing appropriately as the seasons change. Coats, hats, mittens and gloves. If there is snow on the playground they must have snow pants and boots to play in it. Otherwise, they have to stay on the concrete. They need to bring a separate pair of boots for outside recess unless they are rubber or water resistant shoes.

We will utilize Power School as our mass communication delivery system this year for weather closings. Please check that your information is updated and current in Power School so you may receive important school and district information. Announcements will also be made on KOLN/KGIN 10/11 (Lincoln), KSNB Local 4, KHGI Channel 13 and KRGI Radio along with Northwest Social Media accounts.

Our fall sports teams wrapped up this past week. Congratulations to all our athletes and coaches on successful seasons. Winter sports kick off this week with Girls Basketball practices beginning Monday. 8th grade will practice at 1R and 7th grade will practice at Cedar Hollow. Parents will be responsible for picking up following practices at those respective schools. All games will be hosted at Cedar Hollow. We will inform you of the current DHM’s and guidelines for indoor events as we get closer to games. Wrestling will begin practice on Thursday, Oct. 29th at Northwest High School. There will be a Wrestling parent meeting Monday, Oct. 26 at 6:00p.m in Northwest cafeteria. Good luck to the all the winter sports teams.

Our first middle school trimester will end on November 5th. Mrs. Amen has been sharing her love of art with our students. We have some amazing and talented artists in our building. It was so fun to see their work! Mr. Spiehs will join us for the 2nd trimester for Careers. Students will have the opportunity to explore careers, jobs and opportunities for their futures.

Thank you, as always, to the PTO for hosting some fun events and gatherings this past month. There was a great turnout at the Pumpkin Patch as well as the DQ Dining Night out. They have just closed out the Holiday Greenery Fundraiser. Those items should arrive around Thanksgiving just in time for the Holiday season. Reminder PTO meetings are on the second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. Meetings have been zoomed. Please check PTO Facebook for link.

Lastly, have a safe and wonderful Halloween! Reminder to set those clocks back on Saturday night, enjoy Trick or Treating a little longer and fill those buckets with a little extra candy. Another reminder –  Nov. 5th and 6th is Fall Break. Students will be dismissed at NOON on Nov. 5th with NO lunches served and no school on Nov. 6th.

On behalf of the staff and myself, we thank you for your continued support. If you have questions regarding your children’s education, please do not hesitate to contact the office at 385-6352.

Sincerely,

Mr. Retzlaff, Principal
