Note from the Principal Desk January 2021
Parents & Guardians,
Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday break. We are excited to see the students back on Tuesday, January 5th. It is crazy to think we are starting the second semester as it seems like just yesterday we started the school year. We look forward to serving you and your children in 2021. I wanted to share updates and information as we kick this new year off.
All K – 8th 2nd quarter report cards will be available on Friday, January 15th, via PowerSchool. Please log in to see how they did during the second quarter. If you can not find your child’s grades, please contact the office and we will make sure you get them. Reminder, for information or access to the portal go to the Northwest website under “Parents” tab and click on Power School. Here is also a link to guide you. Page 10 provides specific steps for viewing standard based grades: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eKp2pszYzzQ_71ZJXQ-9IjECDGyXRtA4bJ4_aY1lmN8/edit
We successfully completed our Winter MAP testing prior to the holiday break. I am so proud of our K-8 students and the growth they have shown from fall to winter. Students and teachers set goals both individually and as classes. I believe most ALL classroom goals were met. Several students came and shared their individual accomplishments with me as well. Super proud of their efforts! Students will test again in late April and early May. I can not wait to see the growth and hard work over the second semester. Parents, we will share those results with you at Parent-Teacher Conferences on February 10th & 11th.
8th Graders – Mark your calendars! All 8th graders in the district and those interested in attending Northwest High School are invited to Orientation on Thursday, Feb. 4. It is an evening activity that provides you and your families an opportunity to explore Northwest High School, meet the staff, and see the wide variety of educational, academic, and athletic opportunities provided. More information will be shared as the date nears.
7th & 8th grade Boys Basketball will start Tuesday, January 5th. Our 7th grade boys will be practicing at 1R School and our 8th grade boys will be practicing at Cedar Hollow. We will deliver them to practice after school and parents are asked to pick them up after practice each night. No practices on Wednesdays. Your son was provided information from their respective coaches on practice times and schedules before break.
All girls in 6-8th grades interested in Girls Honor Choir, practice will begin on Thursday, January 7th at Northwest High School. Girls will be transported to Northwest auditorium after school. Parents will be asked to pick them up at 5:00 from Northwest. Contact Mr. Pearson with questions. firstname.lastname@example.org
8th grade ONLY girls interested in cheerleading, practice will begin Monday, January 11th.The information has been sent home. If you have questions, contact Mrs. Angela Blank at Cedar Hollow. email@example.com
Please send your children with the appropriate clothing for this time of year. We will do our best to get outside when we can, if even for a short time in K-5. We typically go out if it feels like 20 degrees or above. Students need a second pair of appropriate snow boots and snow pants to play in the snow. Otherwise they have to stay on the concrete play area. Hats, winter coats, and gloves should come to school daily. School closings will be posted via social media, KSNB Channel 4, KOLN/KGIN News, NTV stations, KRGI AM/FM, KSYZ and KZ100 radio stations.
We will continue to ask our staff and students to wear face-coverings when we can not socially distance. I’m proud of our students and staff for the manner in which they handled this in the fall. Please make sure your child has a mask with them each and every day. Students will enter classrooms at 7:45 to help minimize congestion in the hallways, along with staggered dismissals between periods. Teachers will continue to spray hands with sanitizer between classes and in transitions. Custodians and teachers will continue to wipe down desks. Thank you to the custodians for doing an outstanding job disinfecting classrooms, hallways, lockers and bathrooms before and after school. The district will continue to have weekly updates on Tier levels. This information can also be found on the district website under the “Northwest Return to School Plan.” We will continue to follow these protocols along with the DHM’s.
Between now and Tuesday, please make sure your child has a water bottle they can bring to and from school daily. Our drinking fountains will remain off. The one bottle filler by the kindergarten and 1st grade classroom will remain open for filling bottles. It is really important every student brings his/her own each day.
On behalf of the staff and myself, we thank you for your continued support. Have a safe and happy new year! If you have questions regarding your children’s education, please do not hesitate to contact the office at 385-6352.
Mr. Retzlaff, Principal
