Note from the Principal-April 2022

Note from the Principal-April 2022

Cedar Hollow Parents and Guardians,

We at Cedar Hollow very much appreciate the strong role you play in working with us to educate your children.  We take our role very seriously and value the trust you place in us to help your children have a safe, challenging, enjoyable experience here at school!  I want to let you know of some news from Cedar Hollow.

It is state testing time!  Students in grades 3-8 will be taking the NSCAS (Nebraska Student-Centered Assessment System)  test over the next four weeks.  We place emphasis on this test as it lets us know progress our students have made through the year for both our students individually and our school as a whole.  Your student’s teachers or our Powerschool system will  be communicating regarding times and dates for each grade’s individual experience.

I think many of you know Mrs. Stelk is retiring.  We have hired a new teacher, Emily Rush, who has taught in GIPS for a few years.  Mrs. Rush has been teaching first grade and will continue to do that here, and we will have Mrs. Stutzman move to second grade for the coming school year.  Welcome to Mrs. Rush and enjoy a well-earned retirement Mrs. Stelk!!

I also want to let you know that we will have other staff members leaving Cedar Hollow at the end of the year.  Mrs. Glaser (music) will be working on her growing business of private lessons, Mr. Spiehs (middle school careers) will be teaching at Northwest High School next year, and in just a couple of weeks Mrs. Ostdiek (school secretary) will be accepting a position with the Hall County Sheriff’s department.  We will miss all of these individuals and the tremendous role they played as peers and with your children.  Good luck to all!

Our end of the year activities are arriving quickly and I want to make you aware of those for planning purposes:

Note: Northwest Youth Summer Activities and Camp information Registration links are posted on our website and Facebook.

Lastly, I wanted to share a message and resource from our District Technology Integrationist, Heather Callihan:  At some point in their digital lives, most kids will encounter mean and/or crude behavior.  For parents and teachers, the key is to stay involved.  With guidance from teachers, parents and other trusted adults, kids can learn how to safely navigate drama, report incidents and stand up for others.

The linked document here from Common Sense Education shares six tips for families.  It helps clarify some of the language involved in safe communication.  It is important to share an understanding of “unwanted” and “hurtful”.  Whether  related to language or images, both are equally important.

Again if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 385-6306!

Sincerely,

Scott Mazour

Principal
