Note from the Principal- Oct. 2022

Parents & Guardians,

Fall is upon us, harvest is starting and soon the leaves will be turning colors. I love this time of year. Our first quarter will come to a close on October 12. There will be no school for students on Oct. 13 and 14. Teachers will send report cards home on October 24. Parents, please sign and return the envelopes. Report cards will also be available in the PowerSchool Parent Portal. To access the portal go to the Northwest website under the “Parents” tab and click on PowerSchool. Here is also a link to guide you. Page 10 provides specific steps for viewing standard based grades: PowerSchool Parent Portal Guide

This Sunday, Oct. 2nd, from 5-8 PM is the 1R 50th Anniversary/Open House celebration! We will have four different food trucks – Hit the Spot, Rico’s Kitchen, Lazy JK Bar BQ, and Anna Street Trolley. Come and enjoy some great food. PTO will be hosting multiple carnival games and inflatables. Raffle tickets will be for sale to participate in the games and inflatables. A “50” Year Anniversary Cookbook will be available to order as a keepsake with many great recipes from our school families. If you have not had a chance to see the Outdoor Classroom, I encourage you to step out back and eat your meal under this great new addition. We look forward to seeing you Sunday evening to celebrate the many great years 1R has served our students and families. We have also invited former families and staff members. Please share with others you know who are connected to this great school. PTO is still looking for a few volunteers on Sunday to help with Carnival games. Please use this link to sign up if you are able to help them out.  50 Year Volunteer Sign Up

We had a great response for parent teacher conferences with a nearly 94% turn out. Please remember teachers are always available to answer questions or clarify concerns. They may be reached via emails or phone calls. Power School is a great tool to follow your child’s grades and receive alerts.

Mrs. McGowan would like to thank everyone for their support at the Scholastic Book Fair. Her goal was $4,000. She exceeded her goal and reached $4,100. A huge thank you to everyone for supporting students in their passion to read. She will use her portion of the funds to replace and purchase books for the library. PTO had a great turn out for Breakfast Buddies in conjunction with the Book Fair. It was so great to have everyone.

PTO continues to be active. September had a great turnout at Culver’s dining night out. On October 18, there will be another dining out night at the Capital Avenue Dairy Queen from 5-8. Meetings continue to be on the 1st Monday of each month at 6 PM.

Middle school fall sports are winding down. Congratulations to all athletes and coaches on a great fall season. The Boys Honor Choir will be kicking off on Monday, October 17. Mrs. Behrendt has shared signup information with the boys. Winter Sports (GBB & Wrestling) will begin practices on October 24. All home games will be at Cedar Hollow. Wrestlers will be bussed to Northwest for practices. More information will come from coaches as we get closer to the season.

The weather will be changing soon. Please make sure children are dressed appropriately with coats, hats, mittens and gloves. If there is snow on the playground they must have snow pants and boots to play in it. Otherwise, they have to stay on the concrete. They need to bring a separate pair of boots for outside recess unless they are rubber or water resistant shoes.

We will utilize Power School as our mass communication delivery system this year for weather closings. Please check that your information is updated and current in Power School so you may receive important school and district information. Announcements will also be made on KOLN/KGIN 10/11 (Lincoln), KSNB Local 4, KHGI Channel 13 and KRGI Radio along with Northwest Social Media accounts.

On behalf of the staff and myself, we thank you for your continued support. If you have questions regarding your child’s education, please do not hesitate to contact the office at 385-6352.

Sincerely,

Mr. Retzlaff, Principal
