February news and updates from Mr. Mazour
Cedar Hollow Parents and Guardians,
I want to thank you for coming to the Parent-Teacher conferences last week. We had a very strong turnout and appreciate so many of you playing such an active role in your child’s education! We tried something a little different in the middle schools and had the conferences be student-led. Our students in middle school had recently, with the assistance of their teachers, created a number of slides outlining what they are learning in each class. When the parents and students arrived, the students showed that presentation to their parents, and teachers tried to come around when needed and provide further information. From our surveys, we found that our attendance increased from previous years for middle school, and also that the student-led conferences were generally well received. If you have additional thoughts you would like to share, I would welcome your communication, be it pro or con. Â
Our students in grades 3-8 took the NSCAS test right before Christmas, and we received our scores back from the state. Our students as a whole achieved well above the state average. I was so pleased with the progress our students have made in many areas. We get to take the NSCAS test again in the spring to further determine our progress near the end of the year. Â
I want to let you know in advance some dates for this spring. For those that either have incoming kindergartners, or know of someone who does, our Intro to Kindergarten experience will be on Tuesday, April 4, at 8:00 am here at Cedar Hollow. This is a day for parents to come without their incoming kindergartners, and get info pertaining to starting the year next fall and to get paperwork in order as well. More info can be found here.
Other dates for the spring are as follows: Our talent show is Thursday, April 20, at 6:30 pm in the Cedar Hollow gym. There will be practices for those wanting to show their talents prior to this date. Students will receive information in late February regarding the talent show. Our spring vocal concerts for students in grades 5-8 will be held, Tuesday, May 2, at 6:30 pm. Our vocal concert for our students in grades K-4 will be held, Thursday, May 4, also at 6:30 pm. Lastly, our band concert will be held Monday, May 1, also at 6:30 pm. All of these concerts will be held in the Northwest auditorium. In addition, our field day for students in grades K-6 will occur at Northwest on Friday, May 12, beginning at 12:45. Then our Fun Day where all students get to play on a number of outdoor items provided by our PTO is Tuesday, May 16. And then our last day of school is Wednesday, May 17. On this day we will have our recognition programs as follows: 8th grade from 8:15 – 9:15, grades K-4 from 9:30 – 10:30, and then grades 5-7 from 10:45 – 11:45. Â
Again, I thank all of you for being a great partner in your child’s education! Any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Â
Sincerely,
Scott Mazour
